In 1963 Edna moved into a “family group home” on Castlerigg Drive, and was employed as a “house mother” and then subsequently called an officer in charge.
She looked after a number of children in care as this was one of many such houses in the area.
Edna soon moved to Thirlmere and helped set up a homewatch scheme, which then developed into a tenants group, including a bingo and social evening. TADRA was set up in Burnside Community Centre with many local people being active in key positions.
Edna has always been focused on “doing things and improving things in the community and has been involved in making things happen over the years, such as clearing out rubbish, kick pitches, campaigns in London and improving the environment”
She is proud of all the things she has done and has been glad that the bingo had raised enough money to give some to other fledgling community groups. “people have trusted me to do my best, get things done and run things in a proper manner”
“There's a great sense of satisfaction you get when you see things happening – i saw things going down and i felt i needed to do something about it, whether its improving the roads and parking, developing play parks for kids or improving services for elderly people, its all important and great to see improvements”
