Mary was inspired to get involved in community volunteering after having a problem with her flat and realizing that some problems you just have to go straight to the top! “i realized that other tenants had many housing problems that they couldn't get done, this made me decide to join the tenants association and become involved with my community”
Mary has a wide range of volunteering achievements and is the chair of Middleton Pride, Langley pride action group, Langley pride steering group and is secretary of the Langley Tower Blocks tenants association and finally is on the steering group for street wardens.
There are a number of achievements she is proud of, including, being involved with the O.A.P. club for 18 years and she is currently heavily involved in the retirement village. This is a housing development for senior citizens, and will provide new housing after the demolition of the tower blocks. She is very committed to the fact that she wants the best for tenants and that they get a square deal. She wants to ensure that promises made to tenants are kept!
“The things i like about the area are the nice green spaces and the wonderful people” Her aspirations have been helped by working with dedicated people on the estate, all of whom wanted the best for all residents. “By working as a team, the TA's have achieved a lot for the estate which is now showing up by the improvements to properties and the environment. Langley is now being seen as a good area to live with plenty of activities for children”
“I think that it is important for local people to play an active role in the community, to have our say on how the estate is managed, otherwise we will be fobbed off and not listened too.
Everything Langley has obtained has been achieved through volunteer groups, kick pitches, drama groups, dancing classes, girls groups and numerous other activities take place in community centres with dedicated staff and parents”
